07 Tools, giving and receiving

Say what you use, and who gives, lends or teaches what to whom.

Patterns 6

  1. With a tool

    ToolでVerbます。

    I (verb) with (tool).

    はしで さかなを たべます。

    I eat fish with chopsticks.

    なにで たべますか?

    What do you eat it with?

    で = the means or method.

  2. In a language

    LanguageでVerbます。

    I (verb) in (language).

    にほんごで レポートを かきます。

    I write reports in Japanese.

    なにごで かきますか?

    What language do you write in?

  3. What is it in …?

    WordはLanguageで なんですか?

    What is (word) in (language)?

    「ありがとう」は えいごで なんですか?

    What is arigatou in English?

    「Thank you」です。

    It's Thank you.

  4. Give and receive

    Personに あげます ・ もらいます

    give to (person) · receive from (person)

    かのじょは かれに プレゼントを あげます。

    She gives him a present.

    かのじょは かれに プレゼントを もらいます。

    She gets a present from him.

  5. Pairs that work the same way

    に = to (giving) ・ に = from (receiving)

    giving (に = to)receiving (に = from)
    あげます giveもらいます receive
    かします lendかります borrow
    おしえます teachならいます learn
    でんわを かけます callでんわを もらいます get a call

    ともだちに おかねを かします。

    I lend money to a friend.

    ともだちに にほんごを ならいます。

    I learn Japanese from a friend.

  6. Already / not yet

    もうVerbましたか?

    Have you (verb)ed yet?

    もう ばんごはんを たべましたか?

    Have you eaten dinner yet?

    はい、もう たべました。

    Yes, I already ate.
