13 Wants and going to do

Say what you want, what you want to do, and that you're going somewhere to do something.

  1. Wanting a thing

    Nounが ほしいです。

    I want (noun).

    いま なにが いちばん ほしいですか?

    What do you want most right now?

    あたらしい くるまが ほしいです。

    I want a new car.

    いまは なにも ほしくないです。

    I don't want anything right now.

    ほしい works like an い-adjective: ほしくないです (don't want), ほしかったです (wanted).

  2. Wanting to do

    Verb stemたいです。

    I want to (verb).

    たべますたべたいですたべたくないです
    いきますいきたいですいきたくないです
    しますしたいですしたくないです

    なつやすみは どこへ いきたいですか?

    Where do you want to go in the summer holidays?

    おきなわへ いきたいです。

    I want to go to Okinawa.

    きょうは つかれましたから、なにも したくないです。

    I'm tired today, so I don't want to do anything.

    Take off ます and add たい. The object can take が instead of を: すしが たべたいです.

  3. Going to do something

    Placeへ Verb stemに いきます。

    I go to (place) to (verb).

    しゅうまつは うみへ およぎに いきます。

    This weekend I'm going to the sea to swim.

    えきまで ともだちを むかえに いきます。

    I'm going to the station to meet a friend.

    こうえんへ さんぽに いきませんか?

    Shall we go for a walk in the park?

    For a する-verb, use the noun: かいものに, しょくじに, さんぽに いきます. きます and かえります work the same way.

  4. Something, somewhere

    なにか ・ どこか

    something · somewhere

    ふゆやすみは どこか いきましたか?

    Did you go anywhere in the winter holidays?

    のどが かわきましたから、なにか のみたいです。

    I'm thirsty, so I want to drink something.

    を and へ are usually dropped after なにか and どこか.

  5. Ordering food

    Foodを ください。

    (Food), please.

    ごちゅうもんは?

    What would you like?

    ぎゅうどんを ふたつ ください。

    Two beef bowls, please.

    しょうしょう おまち ください。

    Just a moment, please.

    べつべつに おねがいします。

    Separate bills, please.
