06 Doing things (を)

Say what you eat, drink, watch, and invite someone to join you.

  1. Object + verb

    NounをVerbます。

    I (verb) (noun).

    パンを たべます。

    I eat bread.

    みずを のみます。

    I drink water.

    テレビを みます。

    I watch TV.

    を marks the thing the action is done to.

  2. Noun + します

    Nounを します。

    Many activities use します.

    サッカーを します。

    I play soccer.

    しゅくだいを します。

    I do homework.

    でんわを します。

    I make a phone call.

  3. Meet someone

    Personに あいます。

    I meet (person).

    ともだちに あいます。

    I meet a friend.

    だれと あいますか?

    Who are you meeting?

  4. Did you …?

    …ましたか?

    Yes: ました · No: ませんでした

    きのう あさごはんを たべましたか?

    Did you eat breakfast yesterday?

    はい、たべました。

    Yes, I did.

    いいえ、たべませんでした。

    No, I didn't.

  5. What do you …?

    なにをVerbますか?

    What do you (verb)?

    なにを のみますか?

    What will you drink?

    なにも たべません。

    I don't eat anything.

    だれとも あいません。

    I don't meet anyone.

  6. Where you do it

    PlaceでNounをVerbます。

    I (verb) (noun) at (place).

    いえで べんきょうを します。

    I study at home.

    どこで ひるごはんを たべますか?

    Where do you eat lunch?

  7. Always / sometimes

    いつも ・ ときどき

    always · sometimes

    いつも がっこうで べんきょうします。

    I always study at school.

  8. Invite someone

    いっしょにVerbませんか?

    Would you like to (verb) together?

    いっしょに こうちゃを のみませんか?

    Shall we have some tea?

    ええ、のみましょう。

    Sure, let's.

    すみません、ちょっと…

    Sorry, that's a bit… (a polite no)

    〜ましょう = let's. Japanese speakers rarely say a direct no.

    after that, then

    にほんごを べんきょうします。それから デパートへ いきます。

    I'll study Japanese, then go to the department store.

  10. なん or なに?

    なん ・ なに

    Both mean what.

    usewhen
    なんbefore た・だ・な sounds: なんですか · なんの
    なんbefore counters: なんさい · なんじ
    なにeverything else: なにを · なにで

    なんで can mean how or why.
