18 Can, hobbies, before

Make the dictionary form, say what you can do, talk about hobbies, and say what you do before something.

  1. Making the dictionary form

    かく ・ たべる ・ する ・ くる

    The plain present form, as it appears in a dictionary.

    Group I: change the い-sound before ます to an う-sound (かき → かく). Group II: drop ます, add る. します → する, きます → くる.

  2. Can do

    Verb dict. ことが できます。

    I can (verb).

    わたしは ピアノを ひく ことが できます。

    I can play the piano.

    ここで おかねを かえる ことが できますか？

    Can I change money here?

    いいえ、できません。

    No, you can't.

    スキーが できますか？

    Can you ski?

    With a noun or a する-verb noun, just use が できます: にほんごが できます, うんてんが できます.

  3. My hobby is

    しゅみは Verb dict. ことです。

    My hobby is (verb)ing.

    しゅみは なんですか？

    What are your hobbies?

    わたしの しゅみは えを かく ことです。

    My hobby is drawing.

    しゅみは にっきを かく ことです。

    My hobby is keeping a diary.

  4. Before

    Verb dict. まえに、…

    Before (verb), …

    うちへ かえる まえに、スーパーへ いきます。

    Before going home I go to the supermarket.

    しょくじの まえに、てを あらいます。

    I wash my hands before meals.

    3ねん まえに けっこんしました。

    I got married three years ago.

    With a noun, add の: しょくじの まえに. After a length of time, まえに means ago: 3ねん まえに.
