24 Giving, receiving and favours

Say who gave you what, and who did what for whom.

  1. Someone gives me

    Personは わたしに Thingを くれます。

    (Person) gives me (thing).

    ともだちが わたしに ほんを くれました。

    A friend gave me a book.

    おばあちゃんは いつも おかしを くれます。

    Grandma always gives me sweets.

    あげます is giving away from you; くれます is giving to you or your family. もらいます is the same event from the receiver's side.

  2. Doing a favour

    Verb て あげます ・ もらいます ・ くれます

    Who does the favour, and for whom.

    formmeaning
    〜て あげますI do it for someone
    〜て もらいますI get someone to do it for me
    〜て くれますsomeone does it for me

    わたしは いもうとに しゅくだいを おしえて あげました。

    I helped my younger sister with her homework.

    わたしは ともだちに ひっこしを てつだって もらいました。

    I had a friend help me move.

    さとうさんが まちを あんないして くれました。

    Ms Sato showed me around the town.

    ぜんぶ じぶんで つくりましたか?

    Did you make it all yourself?

    いいえ、ははに てつだって もらいました。

    No, my mum helped me.

    With もらいます, the helper takes に: ともだちに てつだって もらいました.

  3. Offering to help

    Verb stemに いきましょうか。

    Shall I come and (verb)?

    ひっこしを てつだいに いきましょうか?

    Shall I come and help you move?

    くるまで えきまで おくりましょうか?

    Shall I drive you to the station?
