10 Where things are

Say what or who is somewhere, and describe positions.

  1. There is …

    PlaceにNounが います ・ あります

    います for people and animals · あります for things

    いえに おかあさんが います。

    My mother is at home.

    いえに テレビが あります。

    There's a TV at home.

  2. Who / what is there?

    だれが いますか? ・ なにが ありますか?

    After a question word, always use が.

    こうえんに だれが いますか?

    Who is in the park?

    こうえんに いぬが います。

    There's a dog in the park.

    だれも いません。

    Nobody is here.

    なにも ありません。

    There's nothing.

  3. Positions

    NounのPosition

    on / under / next to … (noun)

    つくえの うえに ねこが います。

    There's a cat on the desk.

    ゆうびんきょくは ぎんこうの となりに あります。

    The post office is next to the bank.

    ほんやは はなやと スーパーの あいだに あります。

    The bookstore is between the florist and the supermarket.

  4. Where is it?

    Nounは どこに ありますか ・ いますか?

    Where is (noun)?

    ねこは どこに いますか?

    Where is the cat?

  5. に or で?

    に = where it is ・ で = where you do something

    えきの ちかくに ぎんこうが あります。

    There's a bank near the station.

    えきの ちかくで ともだちに あいました。

    I met a friend near the station.
