16 Linking actions and describing

Join actions in order, say what you do after something, describe people and places, and ask how to get somewhere.

Patterns 6

  1. Doing things in order

    Verb て、Verb て、Verbます。

    I do A, then B, then C.

    あさ おきて、シャワーを あびて、かいしゃへ いきます。

    In the morning I get up, have a shower and go to work.

    きのうは デパートへ いって、くつを かって、うちへ かえりました。

    Yesterday I went to a department store, bought shoes and went home.

    Only the last verb shows the tense.

  2. After doing

    Verb てから、Verbます。

    After (verb), I …

    ばんごはんを たべてから、しゅくだいを します。

    I do my homework after dinner.

    おかねを いれてから、ボタンを おします。

    Put the money in, then press the button.

  3. Describing a part

    Topicは Partが Adjです。

    (Topic)'s (part) is (adj).

    ぞうは はなが ながいです。

    Elephants have long noses.

    あには せが たかいです。

    My older brother is tall.

    おおさかは たべものが おいしいです。

    The food in Osaka is good.

  4. Two adjectives together

    い-adjくて、… ・ な-adjで、…

    わたしの へやは せまくて、くらいです。

    My room is small and dark.

    きょうとは しずかで、きれいな まちです。

  5. How do I get there?

    どうやって いきますか。

    How do I get there?

    だいがくまで どうやって いきますか？

    How do you get to the university?

    2ばんの バスに のって、びょういんの まえで おります。

    Take bus number 2 and get off in front of the hospital.

    Getting on takes に (バスに のります); getting off takes を (バスを おります).

  6. Which one?

    どれ ・ どの Noun

    which one · which (noun), out of three or more

    あなたの かさは どれですか？

    Which umbrella is yours?

    あの あおくて、あたらしい かさです。

    That new blue one.

    さとうさんは どの ひとですか？

    Which one is Mr Sato?

    あの かみが みじかい ひとです。

    The one with short hair.
