15 May I, must not, and ongoing states

Ask for and give permission, say what isn't allowed, and talk about where you live, what you know and what you do for a living.

  1. May I …?

    Verb ても いいですか。

    May I (verb)?

    ここで しゃしんを とっても いいですか?

    May I take photos here?

    ええ、いいですよ。

    Sure, go ahead.

    この じしょを つかっても いいですか?

    May I use this dictionary?

    すみません、いま つかって います。

    Sorry, I'm using it right now.

  2. Must not

    Verb ては いけません。

    You must not (verb).

    ここで たばこを すっては いけません。

    You must not smoke here.

    この へやに はいっては いけません。

    You must not go into this room.

    This is a firm rule, said by someone in charge. To turn down a request politely, say すみません、ちょっと…… instead.

  3. Ongoing states

    Verb て います。

    A state that continues: where you live, what you have, what you know.

    わたしは おおさかに すんで います。

    I live in Osaka.

    あには けっこんして います。

    My older brother is married.

    でんしじしょを もって いますか?

    Do you have an electronic dictionary?

    しやくしょの でんわばんごうを しって いますか?

    Do you know the city office's phone number?

    いいえ、しりません。

    No, I don't.

    The negative of しって います is しりません, not しって いません.

  4. Jobs and habits

    Placeで Verb て います。

    What someone does for a living, or does regularly.

    こうこうで えいごを おしえて います。

    I teach English at a high school.

    ぎんこうで はたらいて います。

    I work at a bank.

    だいがくで けいざいを けんきゅうして います。

    I do research in economics at a university.

    あの みせで でんしじしょを うって います。

    That shop sells electronic dictionaries.
